It baffles me, all the hoo-haa about the 'recycling revolution' coming to Oxford.
About time too is all I can say.
For too long, it has been left to the individual to do his or her bit (or not!) for the environment.
Trips to recycling centres are a pain at best and it makes sense for the council to provide a means to enable everyone to participate in something that, in time, will become the norm.
Two things amaze me, though: 1. Why has it taken so long for our esteemed councillors to get their butts in gear to finally implement the changes, when councils like North Kesteven in Lincolnshire have used a wheelie bin scheme for years?
They use a three-bin system for general, recycling and green waste - all on a two-weekly collection schedule! - and I stress bins, not piddly boxes that hold very little or bags that are cumbersome and difficult to move.
2. Why have the powers-that-be have not approached North Kesteven Council (or many like it across the country) for advice on the most efficient way of introducing the scheme?
As usual, things have to be done the hard way, with the usual round of mayhem and cockups that seem to go hand in hand with change. Why should I expect anything different this time?
