Sir – Given that there are many sensible and intelligent individuals who have religious faith, people like Dane Clouston must accept the possibility that it is more than just wishful thinking (Letters, June 27).

Admittedly, religious faith can’t be pinned down using reason, but this doesn’t mean it isn’t real. It is beyond reason; it is ineffable.

Since this argument is fated to go on forever, and since one route to spirituality is through prayer, here is a prayer for atheists: “Dear God, I feel very stupid saying these words because I don’t believe in you, but just in case you are out there, help me to see that there is more to our universe than rationalism.

“Help me to feel outside the box, and come to know your love, your hope, and the path that leads beyond death. Amen.”
