FIREFIGHTERS in Didcot are celebrating after raising more money in a charity car wash than any other station in the UK.

Fire crews from more than 2,000 stations competed in the event, organised by the Fire Fighters Charity.

Watch manager Steve Wright, pictured centre, at the station in Broadway, Didcot, said: “The dedication shown by crews to win this is amazing and we would like to thank all members of the public.

“They have helped to raise funds for our rehab centres, assisting injured firefighters back to work and a normal life.”

Having narrowly missed out on the top spot in last year’s event, the team from Didcot raised more than £1,250 in March and were named national winners in May.

Louse Chapman, county council cabinet member for policy co-ordination, said: “This is a great achievement by the team at Didcot fire station and shows their support for such a good cause.

“I know they love a good challenge and I’m sure there were plenty of happy customers with gleaming cars across the county.”

The Fire Fighters Charity helps serving and retired firefighters, fire station staff and their families.

In 2010, Hook Norton fire station won Station of the Year. Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service was shortlisted for Brigade of the Year.
