NEIGHBOURS have welcomed the seizure of stereo and TV equipment from a house in Barton after a raft of noise complaints.

Sherwood Place residents said they had lost sleep over the racket coming from a terraced house that played booming dance music into the early hours.

Oxford City Council and Thames Valley Police removed two sound systems of eight speakers, two sub woofers and a TV.

A total of 26 complaints were received about the occupiers, who were given noise abatement notices on May 17.

“These were ignored and a complaint was received the same day they were served,” a council spokesman said.

More complaints were received and the council obtained a warrant from Oxford Magistrates’ Court to remove equipment.

Oxford Brookes University student Lia Lavry, 20, said: “The music was really loud.

“I contacted the council because it was just annoying. I’d wake up at three at night and couldn’t sleep.”

Another neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: “In one week it happened four times.

“They started about two at night and stopped about seven in the morning. It was impossible to sleep.”

She said two young men lived at the property and regularly played dance music.

She said: “The problem is you feel the bass, not the melody in the music.

“It is boom, boom. It was very difficult to sleep. At first I thought it was students, maybe finishing their course, so OK, it is your right, have fun.

“We are very pleased. Now we can sleep.”

The council has served 21 properties with similar notices in the 12 months but this was the first in 2013.

Council board member for a cleaner, greener Oxford John Tanner said: “I am only sorry that we had to seize this equipment but we are determined to restore some peace and quiet to the local community.”
