THERE is something deeply unpleasant about Chris Robins’ reference to David Cameron’s support for gay marriage as a superficial gesture to help detoxify the Conservative Party.
I have some reservations about this issue myself, but I have no doubts about the sincerity of Mr Cameron’s convictions. It should be possible for people to differ politically without impugning each other’s integrity.
As for the ‘hug-a-hoodie’ initiative, this was not a phrase used by David Cameron, but the invention of a hostile journalist.
The Times columnist Libby Purves, who is certainly no Conservative hack, described his comments on the issue as thoughtful and compassionate.
