Sir – One cannot but agree with the very adverse comments made by several organisations about the disgraceful bonuses awarded to the NHS directors (Directors of hospital trust shared bonus pot of £135,000, June 6).

Have they no awareness at all of the serious situation faced both by the country and the NHS? Have they no shame, do they know nothing about management and leadership? They should set an example to their staff and not accept these bonuses and then to hide behind the fact that the non-executive directors approved them just demonstrates that those directors need to be replaced.

And, to cap it all, the trust refuses to say what targets were met to justify these bonuses. How can there be any bonuses when the NHS has so many unresolved problems such as the enormous difficulties in A&E?

Might I suggest that The Oxford Times should invoke the Freedom of Information Act and ask for full information on these targets. Doesn’t the trust understand that it is trusted with public money?
