LEADING figures from the worlds of medicine, motorsport, healthcare and business are this week being recognised by Oxford Brookes University.

Today, Margaret Evison, whose son Mark studied at Brookes before joining 1st Battalion Welsh Guards, will become an Honorary Doctor of the University.

Her son died of wounds he suffered while leading a patrol in Afghanistan in 2009, and Ms Evison set up the Mark Evison Foundation, to support young people in challenges, in his name.

Yesterday, Sir Terence English, who led the team that carried out Britain’s first successful heart transplant, and Dr Sarah Kagan, professor of gerontological nursing at Pennsylvania University, became Honorary Doctors of Science, while Adrian Newey, chief technical officer with Red Bull Racing, was made an Honorary Doctor of Engineering.

Mr Newey said: “I have worked with a number of highly skilled graduates from Oxford Brookes.”

Dr Zipporah Ali, director of the Kenya Hospices and Palliative Care Association, will also become an Honorary Doctor of the University today, while Brookes alumnus Andrew Hynard, the UK deputy chairman of global real estate services firm Jones Lang LaSalle, received his honorary doctorate on Monday.
