FIVE HUNDRED cyclists braved 70-mile or 102-mile rides through the Cotswolds on Sunday to raise money for Oxford hospice Helen & Douglas House, which helps seriously-ill children and young adults.

The Circuit of the Cotswolds challenged riders of all abilities to take on a hilly route starting and finishing in Witney, reaching as far as Cleeve Hill, near Cheltenham, in Gloucestershire.

Dan Eves, 27, from Bracknell, decided to sign up the Friday before to take on the 70-mile route with no training.

He said: “It was a tough course but it was a wonderful event.

“There were lots of smiley faces cheering you on and it was a small sacrifice for the work Helen & Douglas House do on a daily basis.

“I will definitely do it next year – there was such great community spirit and everyone was supporting each other.”

Helen & Douglas House’s Circuit of the Cotswolds event, now in its second year, raised more than £30,000 in 2012 for children and young adults with life-shortening conditions.
