A MAN accused of an attempted child abduction has been remanded in custody by Oxford magistrates.

Mihai Lacatusu, of Asquith Road, Rose Hill, Oxford, has been charged following an alleged incident involving a nine-year-old girl on Wednesday.

The 40-year-old appeared at Oxford Magistrates’ Court yesterday afternoon after being arrested and held in custody by Thames Valley Police.

He is a Romanian national and spoke only to confirm his name, address and date of birth with the aid of an interpreter.

Lacatusu, who works washing cars in the car park of Sainsbury’s in Kidlington, has been in the UK for three years.

He has been charged with one count of attempting to take a child from a person having lawful control of him or her.

The magistrates decided they did not have the necessary sentencing powers to deal with the case and sent it to Oxford Crown Court.

Lacatusu was remanded in custody until a preliminary hearing on Friday, June 14. The alleged victim cannot be named for legal reasons.
