LAST year’s Sue Ryder Women of Achievement Awards saw nominations for Abingdon Military Wives Choir and Oxford’s first Green Lord Mayor.

Now the hunt is on for more of the county’s female high achievers.

The seventh annual Women of Achievement awards were launched last month and celebrate incredible women from across the Thames Valley while raising awareness and funds for the Sue Ryder-funded Nettlebed Hospice near Wallingford.

Oxfordshire Women nominated last year included Dalton Barracks residents Lucy Rutledge and Laura Bresciani, who were named in the performer of the year category after setting up the Abingdon Military Wives Choir as a social and support group for women whose soldier partners were in Afghanistan.

Also nominated was Oxford’s first Green Lord Mayor Elise Benjamin, who was shortlisted for the Corporate Social Responsibility prize.

The awards ceremony will take place on October 17 at the Madjeski Stadium Hotel in Reading and will be hosted by the 2012 Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger, who was the winner of the sports woman of the year award last year.

Vicky Smith, regional fundraiser for Sue Ryder, said: “We’re really excited about this year’s Women of Achievement Awards. Last year we had some amazing nominations so we can’t wait to hear more inspirational stories.”
