HUNDREDS of Catholics joined an annual procession through the city centre to mark Corpus Christi.

The tradition of processing from one Catholic church to another to celebrate their faith was revived in 2000 and this year saw its biggest crowd on Sunday.

Led by Bishop William Kenny and parish priest Father Anton Webb, below, the group left The Oxford Oratory, in Woodstock Road, at 2pm, going on to Blackfriars Hall, in St Giles, where they paused for a sermon.

Afterwards the procession continued via Cornmarket, New Inn Hall Street, Queen Street, St Ebbes, to Rose Place and finally the University Chaplaincy, in St Aldates, for benediction.

During the parade Fr Webb called out prayers and those taking part sang hymns.

Fr Webb said: “This year was the biggest it has ever been since 2000. There were 200 to 300 taking part.

“For the first time this year I produced a flyer to explain what was going on. Lots of people, especially in Cornmarket, stopped and were taking pictures and people asked us questions.”
