REGARDING the Oxford Mail’s front page story Pothole Target Proves Elusive (May 28), the Government should be ashamed for not giving local authorities enough money to keep our roads in good repair.
Where does the revenue raised from vehicle road funding?
Does it go to Brussels, or does it go in overseas aid?
Labour’s Liz Brighouse says the problem is that there isn’t enough money to deal with the problem.
Only a couple of weeks ago, there was talk of spending thousands of pounds on alterations to the road layout at The Plain, and was it last year there were schemes drawn up to alter St Frideswide Square?
Has money been put aside for these schemes which are a complete waste of taxpayers’ money, when what is there now works well?
If so, the council has an obligation to spend any such money on road repairs and a duty to safeguard cyclists and motorists and their mode of transport, be it car or bike.
The overall change to the layout in St Frideswide was the answer to congestion problems all those years ago.
So who’s to say that any future changes will be an improvement?
Millions of pounds of taxpayers’ money will be wasted by planners who are not fit for purpose if they get it wrong as often happens.
