THIS was a scene that was repeated throughout the land 60 years ago.

Thousands of parties were held in streets, playgrounds and halls to mark the Queen’s Coronation on June 2, 1953.

This picture was taken at SS Mary and John School in East Oxford, on the Essex Street site.

People living in neighbouring streets were invited to join in the festivities.

The photograph comes from Lynda Millin, whose maiden name was Rolph and who now lives in Weymouth.

She writes: “As well as the party, a fancy dress competition was held for the children. I entered as Miss Muffet, my spider being made for me by a friend of my dad.

“The man standing at the back holding a little girl is Mr Welch, the headmaster. The lady holding a child was my mother, Lilian Rolph (the child is me).

“Directly behind my mother was her sister, Emmie Wakefield, who lived opposite the school from 1918 until her death in 2006 aged 95.”

Mrs Millin also recognises Bill Hale and Mr Wheeler among the adults at the back – and hopes Memory Lane readers will be able to name others.
