PLANS on how to fix a huge crack which appeared in an Oxfordshire road nearly six months ago should be agreed next month.

Following a routine inspection on December 19, a landslide was discovered in Oxford Road on the A4183 between Hinksey Hill and Bagley Wood and the road was closed.

On December 29, following heavy rainfall, the asphalt split open, exposing the earth beneath, and it has remained closed ever since while geotechnical engineers have been investigating the problem.

Oxfordshire County Council spokesman Martin Crabtree said surveyors had been gathering information on the construction of the embankment and underlying geology to establish how it could be repaired.

And he said the council hoped to be in a position to look at the recommendations by the end of this month.

He said: “It is likely that we will have agreed on the way forward in early June.

“Whatever the eventual solution, it is clear that a significant project will be needed.”

Mr Crabtree could not give any indication of the cost or timescale of the work, which would depend on the precise recommendations of the engineering team.

The Stagecoach 31 bus service has been diverted during the closure.
