PUB firm JD Wetherspoons is opening in Abingdon this October, creating about 40 jobs in the town.

It was given permission to convert the old Post Office at 25 High Street in July last year by the Vale of White Horse District Council.

But the firm announced this week work it is due to start in mid-July ahead of the opening on October 8. And the pub will be called The Narrows, which was the former name for the stretch from the Post Office building to The Square before it was destroyed by fire in 1883.

Wetherspoons expect 40 to 45 jobs to be created.

Abingdon resident and a member of Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA), Johanne Green, said: “It is great, it gives a bit more choice in the town.

“They are usually good with choosing their beer and they have cheap food so I think more families will go out into Abingdon because it is quite family friendly.”

The Post Office moved to the Co-op in West St Helen Street in January 2009.
