TENNIS players in South Oxford are set to benefit from a £10,000 revamp of a park’s courts.

The courts at Hinksey Park in Abingdon Road have been resurfaced, painted with non-slip paint and new nets have also being provided.

Cash from Oxford City Council’s Capital Fund for improving Multi Use Games Areas (MUGAs) and Tennis Courts funded the transformation.

Councillor Mark Lygo, board member for Sport, Parks and Events and member of the Oxford Tennis League, said: “These courts have been extremely popular over the years but they also suffered when the area was flooded.

“The work has been required to ensure that Oxford’s future tennis stars have the opportunity to play on the best surface possible. We want to raise the standards of all our facilities, ensuring we inspire as many budding sports stars as possible.”

The work was completed as part of Oxford City Council’s programme to improve all of the council-owned tennis courts in the city and raise the standard of the courts.

The city council will spend £224,000 on refurbishing all of the city’s tennis courts over the next two years. The first project at Florence Park’s five tennis courts was completed at the end of April thanks to a £19,000 cash injection.

Five other tennis courts at Bury Knowle Park, Botley recreation ground, Cutteslowe Park, Cowley Marsh Park and Alexander Park are all set to be improved by summer 2015.

Members of the Oxford Tennis League regularly use the free courts at Hinksey Park. Sally Kinnes, co-founder of the league, said: “We know from our players how much they value these facilities, and it is wonderful to see this kind of investment in the park.”
