S THE crisis in Syria gets ever more brutal, it seems that are there are those who insist that the western world cannot just stand by and watch civilians being massacred, but at the same time insist that military aid to the ‘opposition rebels’ is completely unacceptable.

One thing is for certain, emergency meetings and hand-wringing in the EU and the United Nations will have little or no effect on President Assad or the rebels.

The western democracies are in a damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-don’t situation.

Has anyone got the answer, other than to let them get on with it, but then would the outcome be a safer world?

Who would be a Foreign Secretary?
