PAUL Marlow’s letter (ViewPoints, May 23), ought to be compulsory reading not only for Oxford Mail readers but also Cabinet ministers, MPs and politicians, both local and national.

I say Mr Marlow’s letter, but it would be construed a delivery of an important and impassioned speech at the conferences I have been to over the last 20 years or so. We are well into the 21st century and once again (I have used the phrase before) it is an indictment on society that gay people are continuing to be victimised in – what is supposed to be – a civilised part of the world.

However, blame, if that is the right word, could very well be directed on the Victorian age when it was decreed unlawful for men to form sexual relationships, whereas for women, the very thought was outrageous and, therefore, never made unlawful.

Hence, the visible beginnings of the victimisation of gay people, especially men.

This was all corrected (again if that is the right word) by act of Parliament in 1967.

As to the question of gay marriage, should this not be addressed firstly by the theologians?

The churches of all denominations can then refer their reasonings, proposals and findings to politicians to consider and deliberate on formulating law. This would ensure that everyone in our multicultural society is agreeable and catered for. Is this open for debate?
