A TEAM of disabled teenagers from Oxfordshire won gold in a “mini Paralympics”.
The 10 students from Fitzwaryn School in Wantage competed against teams from three other counties at the Stoke Mandeville Stadium, near Aylesbury, birthplace of the Paralympic Games.
It is the first time children from Oxfordshire have entered the Panathlon competition.
Fitzwaryn teacher Karen Northfield, who accompanied the team, said: “What a fantastic day. It was well organised and the kids had a great time. We have had kids from other schools join the team, so they have made new friends as well.
“They have all got so much out of it, every one of them has taken something from the day.
“They couldn’t wait to get back and show the parents and staff all their medals.”
The 10 students, who teamed up with three students from a school in East London, came first in “new age kurling”, polybat, field athletics and races, and second in table cricket and athletics.
Fitzwaryn’s 14- to 19-year-olds were among 162 children taking part in the Panathlon competition, which has been running for 12 years.
