A BAKERY ingredients company has invested £2.5m in new equipment at its Bicester factory.

British Bakels, based on the Glanville Way Industrial Park, has commissioned new lines of equipment that bosses hope will introduce a more scientific approach to its production. The company has also taken on three extra staff to work with the new technology.

Managing director Paul Morrow said: “The new equipment will allow us to make products that we currently can’t and that our competitors can’t produce either.

“We are using near-infrared technology to check products and see if they contain exactly the right ingredients.”

He added: “It also allows us to control allergens more – we are using it to make more gluten-free products.

“We will have a much more science-based, analytical approach to how we check food.”

British Bakels, which employs 179 staff, is one of the biggest UK suppliers to the food processing and bakery industry, including Tesco and Sainsbury’s.
