REPAIRS to a broken water main in Oxford city centre will be carried out today.

Thames Water is replacing part of a broken 18-inch cast iron pipe opposite Oxford Crown Court in St Aldate’s.

Matthew Rowlatt, project manager for the firm, said: “This is a large pipe that serves most of Oxford city centre, so we can’t just turn off the water without interrupting supplies to thousands of homes and businesses.

“We’ve been planning this repair very carefully to keep disruption to a minimum and will reroute water around the network to keep the city in supply.

“The work should be completed on Wednesday, but we won’t know for sure until we dig down to the broken pipe. We will need to close one side of the road to carry out the work safely. We are sorry for any inconvenience.”

He added that Thames Water has arranged with the county council to install temporary traffic lights for the duration of the repair.

The leaking pipe serves around 2,000 homes and businesses in the city centre.
