OXFORD’S MPs inspected ongoing work forming part of a £1m flood prevention scheme near Redbridge.

Work on the Thames Water scheme at Munday’s Bridge started last month and aims to help prevent flooding in South Hinksey and South and West Oxford.

Yesterday Andrew Smith, MP for Oxford East, and Nicola Blackwood, who represents Oxford West and Abingdon, were shown the work in progress.

The project involves creating a new 900-metre surface water channel and clearing a pond so flood water can drain into it.

Thames Water is also carrying out sheet piling work to line the sides of the Hinksey Drain and improve water flow.

Thames Water spokesman Craig Rance said: “We are very sorry for any disturbance this has caused and would like to thank people for their patience during this work.

“Flooding to homes is utterly miserable and when it floods the tracks as well, thousands of commuter journeys to London are interrupted.”

The entire project is expected to be completed by September.
