AT 8AM, most people are either still in bed or frantically getting ready for work.

But this group of people were up bright and early on Thursday to walk across Oriel College’s playing fields, scattering flowers and playing a fiddle as they went.

It was part of New College’s Ascension Day celebrations which date back 400 years but were resurrected in 2009.

William Poole, a Fellow in English at the college, sped the procession on its way by playing his fiddle.

He said: “It is great to resurrect a tradition which had been written about in the 17th century but hasn’t been practiced since then.

“Some locals turned out and looked amused by our eccentricity.”

The choir of New College attended a short service at Bartlemas Chapel off Cowley Road at 7.45am before processing across the playing fields to an ancient spring.
