OXFORD East MP Andrew Smith was among MPs who paid back profit made on mortgage interest expenses claims, it has been revealed.

The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) has released a list of MPs who have paid back money under new rules put in place in 2010. Up until last August, MPs were allowed to claim expenses to pay interest rates on a mortgage for their second home.

But rules set out by the IPSA when it was founded in 2010 mean MPs were not allowed to make a profit on increases in the value of property.

According to the watchdog, Labour MP Mr Smith paid back £3,933.72 after receiving payments of £6,840.62.

Mr Smith said: “This is a levy the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority made on the notional increase in the value of the property which I stay at when I am in London and which received subsidy of mortgage interest in accordance with the rules. I strongly supported independent control of MPs’ pay and allowances and it was absolutely right to comply with this. I paid the levy to IPSA on October 22 last year.”

The only other Oxfordshire MP to feature on the list is Wantage Conservative member Ed Vaizey, who received payments of £17,226.46 but was not ordered to pay anything back.
