Former Scout George Brooks, 21 – who is now an assistant Scout leader with 33rd Oxford (Kidlington) Sea Scouts – believes Scouting is the education youngsters don’t get at school.
He said: “You get the opportunity to mix with people of similar age groups and other age groups and in team environments and have fun learning something outside the classrooms.
“I’m kind of following on – I enjoyed being a Scout and this is the progression. I see how it benefited me and I’m repaying it.”
He thinks Scouting is needed more than ever because education is geared towards exams, so having something to do outdoors is beneficial.
Among the activities he has taken part in is camping, learning about lighting camp fires, kayaking and rowing, as well as leadership.
