Scouting activities have undergone a revamp in recent years, the scheme now accepts girls, and adventurer Bear Grylls has taken on the post of Chief Scout.

The Duchess of Cambridge, Kate, is a volunteer with the Scouts.

Across Oxfordshire there are 6,257 Scouts and 1,243 adult volunteers. In 2006, the number of youngsters was 4,466.

The number of girls who have joined Scouting has gone up by 51 per cent since 2007. Then there were 572 females, now there are 1,116 across the county.

Popular activities are still included such as camping, kayaking, mountain climbing and cooking.

Scouting was set up by Robert Baden Powell in 1907. Then badges included stopping a runaway horse, now youngsters get badges for IT and skateboarding.
