A MAN who became “obsessive” and angry after drinking alcohol has been jailed for threatening behaviour and assault.

David Reid, of Green Hill, Greater Leys, Oxford, was sentenced to 12 months behind bars at Oxford Crown Court yesterday.

The 44-year-old admitted a charge of threatening or abusive behaviour, a charge of assault by beating and a charge of harassment.

The assault took place in Magdalen Street, on January 3, when he punched Joanna Brealey on the face and head.

Both his other crimes related to his former girlfriend Stephanie Hoare and her new partner Charlie Brown.

On January 28 he admitted arriving at Oxford Central Library, in Bonn Square, where he knew Miss Hoare was, and making threats which included running his hand across his throat in a slicing motion.

He also admitted that between March 5 and March 21 he repeatedly left voicemail messages on Mr Brown’s mobile phone demanding his ex-partner return some of his clothes, and making threats.

Paul Harrison, defending, said that the attack was motivated by an alleged racial slur which Reid had been subjected to. He said: “All of his problems are caused by his dependence on alcohol. It played a part in all three of these offences.”

Judge Patrick Eccles said Reid had an “appalling record” of violent offending, including numerous robberies.

He sentenced him to nine months in prison for harassment, three months for threatening behaviour – to run at the same time – and three months for the assault, consecutive to his other sentences.

Judge Eccles said: “You reacted in all three of these incidents with an obsessive degree of anger towards the way they behaved towards you.”
