EVERY year we are warned of the dangers of jumping from Magdalen Bridge on May Day.

The river is too shallow, there are hidden dangers which may lay undetected below the surface, health and safety etc.

Is it not beyond the realms of possibility to actually do something to facilitate this event?

I have in the past actually seen diggers upon floating platforms on the Cherwell.

Could one of these not dig the area around the bridge deep enough so that nobody would get injured hitting the bottom?

Would it not be possible for a few marshals to police an orderly queue, allow the jumper their turn and when the area is clear, let the next jumper go.

Is this a compensation culture concern? Would it be so radical to allow young enthusiastic free- thinking people to let their hair down once a year?

Could the financial investment used to stop people having a bit of fun, not be better spent by letting them have great fun in the relative safety of a well-organised and prepared annual event.

I don’t want to cause a revolution really but could someone maybe try seeing things from a different angle?
