Sir – Roger Moreton (Letters, April 18) reassures visitors that they will 'scarcely notice the new flats', when walking on Port Meadow from the Walton Well Road approach.

Unless he — and others — continue in the same direction and leave the meadow via Binsey or Wolvercote, they will find it impossible not to notice the hugely imposing development on their way back. I am still perplexed as to why those responsible for approving planning for the flats to be built, overlooking an ancient meadow of outstanding beauty and valued by all the residents of Oxford did not anticipate the outrage that is widely felt at the insensitivity of the development.

Is it too simple to ask if they actually visited the site, prior to agreeing to the plans, to envisage the impact that such a development might have?
