MY DAD and I saw Val Bermingham’s 1950s photograph of her late father, Bill Beaumont, and his Pressed Steel workmates.
My dad, Albert Retter, is in the photo’, behind Bill, looking over his left shoulder.
Now 94, Dad remembers Bill and his brother Jonnie and, being a shop steward at the time, believes he attended Bill’s funeral as a representative of the company.
He cannot recall the reason for the photograph and although a lot of faces are familiar, he can only name one or two.
The photo did, however, trigger a session of reminiscing, as Dad’s career in the machine shop spanned nearly 47 years, from May 27, 1937 until his retirement at 65, on February 10, 1984.
