VOLUNTEERS have helped spruce up Warneford Meadow in Headington to turn it into a piece of managed open countryside.

The Friends of Warneford Meadow have been given consent to manage the meadow by landowner the Secretary of State for Health.

About 30 volunteers visited the site, which has town green status, on Saturday to begin work and tackle “impenetrable” brambles.

Organiser Andrew Carter said: “Our aim is to gradually return the meadow to its original state as a piece of managed open countryside.”

Volunteer Hilary Kneale, pictured, added: “The meadow is a really valuable community resource and although people do walk through on their way to work, the really important thing from my perspective is that it’s a fantastic open meadow in the middle of the city.”
