ALL too often young people are seen as ‘yobs’ who constantly display antisocial behaviour.

However, if there’s one event that shatters those misconceptions it’s the Oxfordshire Youth Awards. The achievements, the selfless acts and the community spirit of the 300 youngsters nominated for the various awards was inspiring.

Among the recipients was a teenager who raised money to ensure other children received gifts in hospital at Christmas and another who campaigned to save their school library from closure.

Others dedicated their spare time to sporting activities or scientific research.

It was an emotional night for the family of Haider Iqbal, who was born with Raine Syndrome, a rare disorder which is usually lethal within a few hours after birth. He defied doctors for 12 years, not only with a smile, but also taking part in activities like sailing and swimming.

After a long battle he passed away at Helen and Douglas House in December.

Tracy Jameson, assistant headteacher at Mabel Prichard School in Blackbird Leys, which he attended, described him as a ‘gentleman’. A lesson for us all.

The awards show that we all have something to be proud off – that Oxfordshire raises, nurtures and educates such great kids.
