Sir – Safeguarding our wonderful green spaces, including Port Meadow, has to be a priority for Oxford.

But it would be a step too far (Report, February 7) to say that rules out any building around those spaces.

The need for homes, especially low-cost homes and student housing, in our city is huge. The inflexibility of the Green Belt means we are simply running out of places to build. What’s more, medium-rise accommodation can be environmentally good. It means residents walk more and drive less, and it stops urban sprawl.

The Rutherway, Plater Drive development in North Oxford is a very successful scheme right next to Port Meadow. Creating acceptable low-carbon homes in Jericho, Wolvercote and elsewhere is essential. But it will not be easy.
