A MANUSCRIPT from the 16th century which was hidden in a church safe in Burford for centuries has now been published.
The Mirror of the Worlde by poet Elizabeth Tanfield Cary was found at St John the Baptist Church in the 1970s.
The study, a translation from French of the text of an early world atlas by Ortelius, was written when the author was 12 or 13 and is now kept in Oxford University’s Bodleian Library. Dr Lesley Peterson, a professor at the University of North Alabama in the US, spent 10 years researching how the writer’s experiences growing up in Burford influenced her, and has written an introduction to a new book featuring the translation.
Published by McGill-Queen’s University Press, the book makes the full transcription of the translation, written in 1598, available for the first time.
