WHAT a joy to read former planning chief Ian Morrow’s comments about planning (February 13). Surely it is time to question and investigate why the planning committee in Oxford does not adhere to Witney’s principles and have public participation.

Instead it regularly fails to make the obvious common sense decisions to shape the future of Oxford. Major flaws are apparent. There is a city-wide failure to provide the correct balance, caring for Town and Gown. This includes the latest expensive and embarrassing fiasco created at the edge of Port Meadow.

Other bungles include: l Hospital expansion – why was it not developed on the ring-road?

  • Trying to close Temple Cowley swimming pool.
  • Trying to remove St Clement’s car park, essential for local independent traders and visitors.
  • Allowing Tesco’s to let buildings fall into disrepair.

Councillors have been forced to act and appease protesters regarding Port Meadow. Is this because they’re affluent, influential residents? Decisions are made against residents’ strong, valid views. No true consultation, no transparency, no clarity and conflicts of interests. Perhaps we have reached the point that local government should be free of party politics.

This would enable candidates to be free to work for their community. People would vote for successful candidates with confidence, into a position of trust – able to make a difference for the best for their community without a hidden agenda. Polling stations would be full!
