Sir, Any development in a city such as Oxford poses challenges. It is no surprise that some object to the plans or wish to see them changed.

However, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring real improvement to a long overdue area of the city, secure employment in an important sector of the economy and give the vast majority of Oxford residents and users the high-quality retail experience and environment they deserve.

I have been impressed with the level of debate and consultation entered into by the Westgate Partnership. Their involvement in Oxford over 20 years and their continuing commitment to the city can be seen in the care they have taken to consult widely and over a sustained period.

The plans are brought forward by two of the most highly regarded organisations in their field, Capital Shopping and John Lewis.

They have displayed an immense confidence in Oxford, they know their business and understand the way the world is moving.

This is a good development for Oxford and it should be supported. It will pose challenges, but the city is more than capable of meeting them.

I would rather see Oxford cope with the challenges posed by a successful economy than those created by a failing one in the years ahead.

The implications for the city if the plans are rejected are considerable.

There is no plan B, no other developer will come in, the area will continue to deteriorate and the opportunity to improve the environment, increase the overall quality of life, sustain prosperity and ensure the economic success and all that means for the residents of Oxford will be lost for another generation.
