A GROUP for deaf people has found a way of making sure its members can enjoy Christmas carols this year.
A choir from the Oxford Deaf and Hard of Hearing Centre will take to the streets to perform a host of timeless festive favourites using sign language. Conducting the quiet choir will be interpreter Judy Scholes.
She said: “It will look like a choir, with a lot of hand waving.”
She has had to translate the seasonal songbook into British Sign Language, and make sure it makes sense.
The choir has been practising its synchronisation in rehearsals to make the performance as visually clear as possible.
Some words, such as ‘star’, are denoted by gestures which people may recognise but others are not as obvious to those who do not sign.
A video of the rehearsal will be uploaded to deafdirect.org.uk to which anyone can practise.
The choir will perform at Sainbury’s in the Westgate Centre at 1pm on Saturday, December 15.
