Schoolchildren showed an impressive knowledge of books as the Kids Lit Quiz celebrated its 10th birthday.

Teams from Oxford’s Cherwell School and Henry Box School in Witney were among 30 local schools which dazzled the quizmaster of the regional heat.

The annual event for 11 to 13-year-olds was held at St Gregory the Great School in Cricket Road on Friday.

The Cherwell School scooped first place with 90 points, four ahead of the runners-up.

Matthew Olliver, 12, from Henry Box School, said: “I had a great time and I loved the fact it was so competitive.”

Their team finished in the middle of the table.

International quizmaster Wayne Mills said: “I asked some questions from the New Zealand finals, and they were getting the answers right, with ease, and they are very tough questions.

“I’m not that shocked because the knowledge in Oxford is always impressive. It is a very literary city.”

Cherwell School will compete in the UK final in Coventry tomorrow.
