FUZZY top lips appeared on thousands of men last month.

Some were manly bushy affairs and others a little stragglier, but all were grown to raise money and awareness about men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

But one of the youngest of those sporting a moustache was six-year-old Douglas Finch, from Florence Park in Cowley. He wore a selection of fake moustaches over the course of November. Douglas was inspired to join in on the fundraising by his grandfather, Peter Finch, 80, who has had prostate cancer for the past eight years.

Douglas’ father, Ed Finch, 41, said: “Luckily my dad’s prostate cancer was caught early, and that is the key message.

“With prostate cancer, if it is caught early it is manageable as long as it remains benign.

Douglas was also motivated by his desire to raise “mo” money than his dad.

He said: “My mo thingy is to stop people having nasty illnesses and beat my dad at raising money.

“I am a one-year Movember participant. I was excited about my dad doing it last year and wanted to join in.

“I particularly liked my banker moustache,” he added.

Asked if it had been itchy wearing the fake mos, Douglas said: “I have been itchy for years, but this week was particularly itchy.”

He even made videos which he uploaded to YouTube to further his fundraising efforts.

In the mo-vies, Douglas took to the streets of Oxford and showed off some stylish dancing whilst wearing his collection of moustaches.

He also got to meet members of the public and tell them about his challenge.

And, in the end, it paid off. Douglas raised £151, while Mr Finch was a whisker short with £140.

Mr Finch said: “I am very proud of Douglas, he made an amazing effort, he really led it and wanted to make the money himself.

“The people behind Movember have found something that allows men to talk about these health issues like prostate cancer, and that is amazing.”

Douglas’ mum Diane did not join in this year, but Mr Finch thinks she will have to join in next year in order not to feel left out.

An increasing number of men have been growing sponsored moustaches each November for the Movember charity.

This year in Oxfordshire, hundreds of men grew moustaches; some for personal reasons and others just to help a friend.

The rules of Movember are strict: the moustache must be distinct from any other facial hair, not adjoined to any beard or sideburns. This was not a problem for Douglas.

The charity started in Australia in 2003, and in November last year the 854,000 participants raised £79.3 million.
