PAMELA St Clair correctly pointed out that St Aldate’s is often unpleasantly clogged with buses. However, she is mistaken in thinking that most of them are under-used.
The bus companies do use smaller buses on lightly-used routes (such as the one through Jericho). But the buses along Iffley Road (for example) can be full at any time of day, as far as Carfax.
They then (happily) continue to the railway station, with fewer passengers. The many routes that terminate in the city centre have, unfortunately, no practicable alternative to using St Aldate’s as part of the way they turn round.
Given the constraints imposed by Oxford’s history, we have remarkably efficient bus services. And all of them can carry users of wheelchairs.
