A FIRE gutted offices inside an Oxford Brookes University building yesterday morning.

The John Payne building, in Gipsy Lane, Headington, is currently closed to staff and students and will remain shut for the next few days.

The blaze broke out before midnight and firefighters fought through the night to rid the building of smoke.

Eyewitnesses on social networking sites reported four fire engines and smoke visible from hundreds of yards away.

The building, which opened in 2010, houses a technology lab and architectural workshop as well as office space for the university’s capital projects team.

Spokesman Edward Reed said it could be weeks before some sections of the building were open again.

“It was a small fire but we are still working to find out the cause,” he said.
