l REGARDING your report (Do we eat or heat?, November 19), I was somewhat concerned by the figures.

Undoubtedly many pensioners are finding it very hard to pay their bills.

However, the figures you present for the widow would suggest to me, with very limited knowledge of economics, that she must be very poorly advised.

Obviously I don’t know what accommodation she is in but as a widow of the same age, living in a bungalow, my bills don’t appear anything like as high as hers. My water, on a meter, is only £176. How can hers be £300? Nor are my gas or electricity bills as high as hers. I haven’t calculated my food bills, but council tax, one of my biggest single payments is omitted from the equation, as is a telephone bill, which features in most modern households.

So, although it was an interesting report, it left me with quite a few question marks.
