IT WAS no surprise to read about Ann Madden falling due to faulty paving in Witney town centre (November 14). This was an accident waiting to happen.

I have been contacting Oxfordshire County Council for almost two years now, asking it to make significant repairs to improve public safety in the very same areas.

Only 10 days ago, in this newspaper, I called for Councillor for Highways Rodney Rose to resign because of his intransigent attitude towards pedestrians. On May 4, in response to my complaints, some of the many defective paving slabs were given a token repair of having sand poured into the gaps around the edges.

Again, after complaining, it appeared as though my complaints were being taken seriously when yellow marker paint was sprayed to highlight the protrusions and trip points.

Sadly, that’s as far as repairs went.

So now someone has been seriously injured. Oxfordshire County Council should do a thorough job of repairing all affected areas and, at the same time, should now pay out large damages for injured pedestrians.

Mrs Madden says the council said they inspect and maintain the pavements every month. That is bare-faced lies. I have not witnessed any appropriate repairs to any of Witney’s walking areas. Repairs are not that difficult to do properly.

So Rodney Rose, it will be on your shoulders if an infirm and frail pedestrian is fatally injured (a bang on the head sustained in a fall is all that’s needed).
