THIS was the day work stopped and pleasure began.

We published one picture of workers at Hunt Edmunds brewery at Banbury enjoying an annual outing, probably in the 1920s (Memory Lane, May 7). They were photographed on a Salter’s steamer, having left Folly Bridge, Oxford, for a trip down the Thames, possibly as far as Windsor.

The picture above dates from the same period, but this time we know the exact date and where the brewery workers were going, as the photographer has noted both – Bourton-on-the-Water, September 23, 1921.

It comes from Bert Dowler, of Bodicote Road, Banbury, who came into contact with many publicans as the firm’s free retail representative.

He believes it was probably taken at the firm’s stores at Pershore, Worcestershire.

As we recalled, the brewery was founded in 1840 by John Hunt. With the Edmunds’ family on board from 1850, it expanded and at one stage, had more than 100 pubs.

Brands produced at its Bridge Street brewery included Banbury Best Bitter, Banbury Brown Ale and Banbury Cross Ale.

Hunt Edmunds was absorbed by Bass, Mitchells & Butlers in the 1960s, ending 120 years of brewing.
