WITH Remembrance Sunday in the forefront of people’s minds, a First World War exhibition came to Banbury at the weekend. The Europeana 1914-1918 Family History Roadshow took place on Saturday.
Families were invited to bring photos, letters, diaries, film and audio recordings as Europe’s digital museum joined forces with Oxford University and the British Library to create an archive of previously untold stories of those involved in the conflict.
Among the exhibits was an album, inset, brought by a family from Lincolnshire.
Historians and experts from the Soldiers of Oxfordshire Museum, the Western Front Association and Oxford Museum Services were on hand to talk about the significance of finds.
Acting Sgt Peter Neal, from The Rifles Living History Roadshow, pictured left, with Rifleman Gary Wise, was one of those who was introducing people to the weapons of the First World War and in particular a Lee Enfield rifle.
Acting Sgt Neal said: “The day went fantastically. It was an opportunity to play my part in sharing my knowledge of soldiers’ way of life.”
