OXFORD: Oxford University is among the signatories for a new declaration on openness in animal research.

The university, the target of bitter protests over its animal research lab in South Parks Road, is among 41 organisations which have put their names to a declaration about transparent approaches to animal research.

The declaration talks about striving to reduce the number of animals needed in research and seeking to develop viable alternatives.

During 2005 and 2006, police had to deal with hundreds of demonstrators who staged city centre protests over the lab being built. Some workers on the site received threatening letters from extremists.
