It has been snowing for weeks, catching the ski resorts by surprise. Snow in September? Who knew.

But then it seems that nothing is certain anymore. And skiing, however exhilarating and fun, has always been unpredictable. There are no guarantees, even with all the snow machines in the world to hand.

So if I have one piece of advice, it’s to go high. The top resorts are much more likely to have snow and glaciers, Val D’Isere being a prime example. Which is why it’s one of Inghams most popular resorts.

Ticking all the boxes, the French ski village is wonderfully picturesque but modern in approach, the apres is second to none and the skiing is superb. It also boasts two glaciers, 300 km’s of ski runs, 1900m of vertical and 10,000 hectares of skiing.

Inghams make your visit even more pleasurable by taking all the angst out of travelling. Flying from Gatwick to Geneva the transfer passed through numerous grassy lower resorts as it wound higher and higher, despite being greeted by snow on our arrival.

Our accommodation for the week was the recently renovated four star Chalet Hotel & Spa Le Savoie whose wonderfully spacious rooms and suites hosted us. Greeted by the hotel manager and head chef, hospitality was the name of the game from the moment we arrived, the impeccable standards maintained throughout.

But there was no time to waste, heading to Snowberry Ski Hire where we were kitted out on to to sort out our lift passes before trying a street golf session being played around the village - a glorified pub crawl, and a great way to break the ice and introduce you to the numerous, varied and enticing delights of Val d’Isere itself.

A superb dinner in the hotel restaurant followed. and we were ready for a good night’s sleep. We awoke to heavy snow, and were therefore grateful for the knowledge, skill and patience of our guide from Progression Ski, who assessed our individual merits and introduced us to the delights and enormous range of skiing available in Val d’Isere and further afield.

As a sign of their ongoing commitment to update their range, the new Solaise 10-person gondola can take 40 per cent more people up the mountain, an impressive 3,600 people per hour in its sleek, black, tinted cabins - 91 in total a stylish ride, connecting you to the the vast range of slopes on offer. Unsurprisingly then, the resort then won a double accolade – European Ski Resort of the Year and Ski Resort of the Year in 2016.

Skiing aside, we stopped at La Folie Douce for lunch, a marvel to behold. What have we here? Dancing girls, acrobats, clowns, singers, dancers, all dressed in cabaret style costumes, the endless trestle tables of skiers, eating drinking, singing and dancing along. Many came to the resort just for this experience, failing to get back on their skis for the afternoon, preferring the revelry, a spectacle to behold.

It’s restaurant La Fruiterie was rammed so booking is essential, but a self service style arrangement caters for the masses. The wonderful food and atmosphere, and a chance to staple some really superb French food, was well worth the wait.

When we finally skied back, the hotel spa, pool, jacuzzis and steam rooms were enormously welcoming , readying us up for another full day on the slopes. Braver, surer, ready to tackle the more challenging pistes, Val d’Isere caters for everyone, whatever your age or level, from adrenaline junkie to beginners.

Lunch was at the more traditional La Grande Ourse, the tartiflette in particular an absolute must.

Our last afternoon was the best so far, the sun out, the slopes wide, the snow superb, waiting until the last lift closed before reluctantly stopping for the day. The music from the bars dotted down the slopes meant we enjoyed the remainder dancing in the sunshine happy in the knowledge that we had given it our all.

Val d’Isere is not only moving with the times but embracing them and having a lot of fun along the way. And with Inghams making the entire experience as enjoyable as possible, it’s a fairly winning combination.
