Traditionally, this is the time of year for personal reflection. After the sheer indulgence of the distant festive season, the first weeks of the new year bring about a sobering realisation – and bathroom mirrors across the country face an onslaught of often unrealistic resolutions.

Unfortunately, it is estimated that half of us will have already faltered by the end of January, have you?

To see me through my Dry January promises, I broke the monotony of this bleak month and escaped the Shire for a weekend in the capital – cocooning myself away in what’s quickly become my favourite refuge in London.. and possibly, soon to be yours too.

It’s a grey winter’s day on Poultry, in the heart of the City’s suit-and-tie territory. But inside this urbane and relaxed enclave for creative types is an oasis of calm – where attentive service makes you feel like a million dollars, even if you already are.

It’s this devotion to detail that sets The Ned apart from the pack.

Built around a 20m verdite-clad pool, Ned’s Club Spa is in the belly of Soho House & Co’s latest hybrid-hotel. It is a place in which to totally unwind – a sanctuary of serenity for City slickers to swim, sauna and steam.

As the antithesis to the nearby Mithraeum – the mysterious underground Roman shrine dedicated to Neroesque decadence – this Lutyens-designed discovery beneath the streets of Londinium honours health, beauty and well-being.

And, just because I’m treating my body as a temple, it doesn’t mean having to compromise when it comes to nourishment.

Bringing a taste of California life to the City, bijou leafy-green Malibu Kitchen is the perfect spot for a light bite at luncheon.

Oxford Mail:

It’s a kaleidoscope of colour, packed full of flavour and fantastically fresh. Or, why not carelessly watch the world go by at Asian-Pacific inspired hot-spot Kaia, to enjoy sharing plates of sashimi and non-alcoholic botanical blends.

A home-from-home for any thoroughly modern man or woman about town, The Ned is perfectly poised to enjoy all the capital has to offer – including Fortnum & Mason’s new offering in the adjacent neoclassical landmark, Royal Exchange. Or, for maximum ‘me time’, one can simply hunker down on a chilly afternoon to devour a great read in the new Library Bar – an elegant setting worthy of F Scott Fitzgerald’s typewriter.

My room, needless to say, is tastefully appointed with richly patterned furnishings, vintage furniture and Classic FM floating gently from a Roberts radio.

As you’d expect, room service is available morning, noon and night.

However, even if you’ve forgotten your trunks, award-winning online men’s stylist Mr Porter is on hand to treat yourself to a new pair from French designer brand Vilebrequin.

The full complement of Cowshed’s natural product range is available in abundance to enjoy in the walk-in rainforest shower or rock ‘n’ roll roll-top bath.

Oxford Mail:

I resist the minibar big enough to sink an Armada and instead submerge myself in a tub of Soho House’s trademark Cowshed Lazy Cow bubbles.

Following an early morning Moody Massage, I relent to a hearty caffeine and carbs combo at the marble-clad counter of Jewish-style New York eatery Zobler’s Deli & Diner.

As the hustle and bustle of another day unfolds, I relish bathing in the healthy afterglow...and, let’s be honest, unapologetic smugness.

Checking out, I catch a glimpse of this new gentleman in the mirrored walls of the former Banking Hall as I make my way into 2019 with thoughts of spring in my step.

One night at The Ned is never enough, but this stay will stay with me long past winter - even if my new year good intentions don’t.
