There are those weekends when nothing else will do other than bacon and coffee, despite the refined options now available to those on the lookout for a good brunch.

With my requirements in mind, I went on the hunt for somewhere where I could tuck into a bacon baguette with lashings of brown sauce and a cappuccino outside Oxford.

Crumbs is based on the High Street in Wheatley, a large village within a stone’s throw of Oxford and a short ride on the 280 bus from town or a long walk over Shotover Hill. It’s a busy venue that serves the village faithful with breakfast and lunch options, offering generous portions and friendly service.

I ordered a bacon baguette (£3.10) and a cappuccino (£2.10), grabbed a paper and sat down while waiting for my food.

I didn’t have to wait long at all and the bacon baguette ticked all the necessary boxes.

Partnering my baguette with a cappuccino meant I tucked into my brunch happily while enjoying the busy atmosphere.

This is a hassle-free venue where you can enjoy watching village life go on around you.

Crumbs is a no frills kind of cafe, not trying to attempt to be anything other than a village stalwart and a hub where people go for a coffee, a brunch, a lunch or a cake.

It’s noticeable when places are trying too hard and the authenticity has been lost, but it’s alive and kicking in here, serving the community exactly what it wants.

For those brunch enthusiasts wishing for something more substantial, the classic full English is available at £6.

There are also plenty of cakes available, including gluten-free options, for anyone wanting to finish brunch with a tasty treat.
