Men prove they can multi-task as Marc West books in to a new monthly club where barbering and socialising combines

Do you ever roll out the wrong side of bed on Monday morning wishing the bed head look was back in vogue (again)?

With the continued rise of the dedicated follower of fashion, male grooming has become big business and traditional barbering is the order of the day for any self-respecting hipster. We all know that first impressions count, so when I heard through the grapevine that my favourite OX4 drinking establishment The Library was hosting my London stylist of choice at a new monthly pop-up event called Youngmans Grooming, I booked an appointment for not only a cut, but a wet shave too.

I’ve had all sort of crazy cuts over the years. Never one for just a short back and sides, I’ve mainly copied my teen heroes like Paul Weller and Johnny from Menswear (remember him?) However, I now feel more confident in my appearance and know what style works for me – especially as a little salt ‘n’ pepper is starting to poke through. As I get comfortable in the red leather of the old chair, I can’t help but wonder how many secrets may have been shared in this very seat? And how on earth he’s going to tame my barnet. Believe me, he’s got his work cut out.

For the past few years, those in the know have been taking their cues from Mad Men’s Don Draper and rockin’ a super-slick ‘60s look. However, instead of styles held together with thick, glossy pomades, this season is more about matt texture that doesn’t stay glued to your scalp in a stiff breeze – are you keeping up with all this? The “new pompadour” (as it’s become known) is more messily styled and can currently be seen on the head of trendsetter David Beckham – and now, me too!

Youngmans Grooming is a concept dreamt up by Craig Evans – a suited and booted chap from Drayton, near Abingdon, with more than a nod to his style icon, Buddy Holly.

This fashion-conscious entrepreneur has created a social club of sorts where like-minded individuals can meet, grab a nifty cut, a bite to eat and maybe even a cheeky half of craft lager of an afternoon; who said men couldn’t multi-task, eh? There’s even entertainment in the form of live local music from indie outfit Orange Vision. And, those waiting their turn needn’t be bored with the usual dog-eared copies of Trainspotter’s Weekly. Such is the young vibe of this enterprising set-up, dapper gents can flick through the latest titles, play some cards or shoot the breeze whilst listening to the coolest tunes pumping from the stereo.

As I reclined back with my face wrapped in hot towels, I imagined I was in a Backstreet Boy’s den in downtown Cowleyfornia – with the smell of summertime barbecues drifting through the open door. But the razor by my jugular reminded me to hold still and stop tapping my toes to Town Called Malice.

When all is done, I splash on some cologne and look into the mirror on the wall - hardly recognising the clean-shaven face staring back. I’d scrubbed up rather well (if I do say so myself). It’s an experience every discerning young gentleman should treat himself to on occasion. And, at this particular up-and-coming establishment, a snip at the price compared to the capital.
